External Wall Insulation Systems

Insulating your External walls can cut your heating costs considerably, because external walls let 35% of heat out of your building.

If your home was built before 1919, its external walls are probably solid rather than built with a cavity.

Cavity walls are made of two layers with a small gap or ventilated air space between them which can be filled with insulation. Solid walls have no gap, so they let more heat through.

Another way to tell is by measuring the width of the wall. Look at an external wall window or door and if the brick wall is less than 260mm, then it is likely a solid wall, while if it is greater, it is probably a cavity wall.

Most houses built from the 1990s onwards have some type of wall insulation to keep the heat in, as this is about the time that Building Regulations required some form of insulation to be used, but if your house is older than this it is likely that your home will have no insulation in the walls. If this is the case then you are heating the outside air, instead of just heating your home.

The insulation systems we are offering here are specifically for solid masonry walls and may have to be adapted for use on other types of construction such as timber or steel frames buildings or those using structurally insulated panels, S.I.P’s.

Why Externally Insulate?

Insulated and rendered properties are transformed into warm, energy efficient and attractive homes/buildings. External wall solutions comprise of an insulation layer fixed to the existing wall, with a protective render or decorative finish including brick slips or brick effect render applied to it.

  • Can reduce heating bills by over 25%
  • Refurbishing traditional houses
  • Overcomes moisture/condensation issues
  • Protects and improves the existing building envelope
  • Improves the building’s appearance

Key Approach to an External Wall Installation

  • Properties need to be fully surveyed
  • Is substrate suitable for mechanical fix?
  • Is there sufficient overhang on cills/soffits?
  • Gates/satellite dishes, a provision needs to be made for refix
  • Are windows and reveals suitable?
  • Do soil pipes need to be moved?

Key stages for a typical house:

  • Boarding and beading 1-2 days
  • Base coat and Mesh 2 days
  • Top coat /finish 1daysUsually a 2/3 man team
  • Drying times required for stage 2 up to 3-5 days, dependant on weather
  • Can only be applied if temp is 5 degrees and rising.

Moisture Movement & Ventilation

In traditionally built properties, such as a solid wall or were you are over insulating a cavity wall construction, it is recommended to use a breathable (vapour permeable) insulation material, as this allows for the continuous movement of vapour through the structure and  helps reduce the possibility of moisture build up.

If you are planning on installing a non-breathable ( vapour impermeable) insulation materials on your property, then we recommend you also have a ventilation policy in place, as consideration needs to be given to ventilate your home to avoid the build-up of moisture known as Condensation, however ventilation in any insulated properties should be employed, as improving the insulation levels and reducing drafts and air leakage will increase the risk of condensation if not controlled by means of a proper ventilation policy.

Controlled ventilation is also vital to provide a healthy living environment.
